Elephant or Seal? by vickisfotos

Elephant or Seal?

On Hwy 1 of the California coast we came upon a fantastic surprise! A whole beach of seals!!! They were laying in rows, babies and bulls and mommies. Some yelling at each other, some tossing sand in the air, most sleeping. It was unreal! Amazing in so many ways, I am still in awe when I remember it. The sound was as great as the sight! I would love to post a zillion of them but have learned with 365 to find ONE that shows the most of what you want to show. So here is one of my favs for the day.
What a sight!!!!! Great find and shot!!!! Creatures big and small all sharing the beach and enjoying the sun!

What a fantastic capture, Vicki. I can imagine that it is like the ducks and geese that I take photos of, the sounds are awesome. How cool to find something like this. Curious, how far down the coast were you or were you north of the San Francisco area? I hope to get in a coast trip this year as I love the drive on Hwy 1.

What an awesome and unforgettable find - great capture, the baby is so cute! I had a very similar discovery when vacationing in CA years ago with my ex-wife: we were driving south on Hwy 1 and discovered a beach full of seals - a very unforgettable moment!

Beautiful shot. What a wonderful surprise to come across. Love how you picked this one to share with all us 365ers. I don't think I would come down from that experience for a long time. I adore Seals.

Bot maybe! Great capture.

@darsphotos we were in the San Simeon area. what a fun surprise. It was so funny because we were driving south and came upon just three of them on the beach. I made my husband throw out the anchor and I shot and shot. People driving north past us were just staring, but I was amazed that they didn't stop too. Then we saw why when we headed just a tiny bit down the road and there was the whole beach FULL of them. We kind of felt silly then.

@soboy5 I bet it was the same beach...just below San Francisco on Hwy 1. San Simeon area. yes, it was amazing! I have seen seals in places along Oregon, but not the elephant seal and not so many at once. Truly unforgettable!

Wow! amazing shot.
I see them around the coast of Maine sometimes. - they congregate out on some rock and bask in the sun. the big one here that you have captured kind of looks like a walrus!

@greyfeather @elizabeth264 they are elephant seals. When we saw the first one up the beach and i was SURE it was a walrus...but there was a sign down the beach where the most of them were laying and it said they were elephant seals. I am still so excited to have seen them!
