like the idea - still life or food photography is always a great subject but can be challenging especially the lighting. I think the subject would have more impact on a white plate as the red from the roses tend to detract from the subject matter as does the shadow. Also a slighter smaller aperture to increase the DOF would make the overall image stronger but you have the right idea of introducing a bokeh effect. The most important thing though is that you have given it a go and the beauty of Still Life and Food photography is that things are always available for you to have another go if you want to.
@followthatdreamphotography re: the white plate - now that you mention this I agree - the plate is a distraction from the food. Thanks for the feedback. I really was looking for the fall off to be stronger with the shallow DOF. I agree that this is too much. Unfortunately my subject matter is no longer. My wife has eaten them. :-). A few days later on from this photo I came across a video on shooting still life. I think I would light this much different now as I think the shadows are a little too strong.
