Fairy Fire. by wendyfrost

Fairy Fire.

An untidy sprawl of toadstools opposite my house where the poplar trees have been chopped down and I was surprised to see when the sun shone on them the stalks glowed fluorescent green. Mr Google says it is "Foxfire" and sometimes called "Fairy Fire" it is the bioluminescence created by some species of fungi present in decaying wood. Although I haven't caught it on camera a few of the stalks have a strip of green glow on the R/H side.
Perhaps go out tonight creep upp on them with a torch and use long exposure to get luminescence?? Don't go out if raining or snowing or ...... They look tiny, well spotted

Does this luminous colour of the stems indicate they are poisonous ? Great find and capture .Wendy ,

@beryl The luminosity attracts insects to spread spores and deter wild animals from eating them says Mr. Google

Amazing how close together they're growing.

Interesting info- I've had these in my backyard on the wood pile but haven't seen the glowing effect. I'll have to watch for it the next time I find them. Nice close-up!
