Miniature Tree

My husband created this tree scene in a modeling "Ground work" class. The wooden base that it is sitting on is approx. 2 1/2 inches wide.

That's great work. What is it made of? It reminds me of a tree we saw at Hobbiton that was made specially for the scene. Only it was life sized.
