@jetr Yes, they are painted ladies! I wanted to raise the black swallowtails (and still might). The parent of one of our students has some swallowtail caterpillars she said she would give me.
It's incredible how fast they can turn. Once there was a caterpillar on some greens in our CSA box, but I had to stay at church for an event that night so couldn't take it immediately home. When the event was over, I was going to show the caterpillar to one of the kids and it had already turned into a chrysalis! Happened to be the day Steve Jobs died, so we said that when it hatched we would name it "Steve".
@margonaut You know, when you read about the butterfly cycle, which I do a lot with my students, there's never a timeline -- I had no idea it would be that fast!
