You're probably too young to remember, but Cuisenaire Rods were my favorite math manipulatives in 2nd grade. It's how I learned to love math. And ended up with an engineering degree, so... never forget that you might be changing someone's life.
@margonaut I love that you are an engineer -- I can see that in some of your quilts -- and that your 2nd grade math led you in that direction! I think we are close to the same age. I went to Catholic school and I don't think we had Cuisenaire Rods, but I was a kindergarten assistant for a few years with a teacher who was "old school," and we had a box of them in our classroom. She retired, so I should go back and see if they are still there! I usually teach writing and a little reading, but every once in awhile I help out with math vocabulary. I've already had to have this explained to me twice, so right now I'm just hoping I don't confuse them . . . I will have to remember that this might be the lesson that makes math click for them.
