foraging for fruit

Now I'm jealous. These look delicious and I have to buy my blueberries in little plastic containers.

@eudora These came from my mom’s backyard — the first we’ve picked this year. She and my middle son used to make many batches of jam together every summer, but now that he’s a grownup he only had a week’s vacation. Since it’s the beginning of blueberry season in Pennsylvania they only had enough for one batch of jam last week.

Wow, these look great. I think I've managed to kill both the little bushes that I planted. And now my (very old) fig trees are dying. Don't know what's going on this year, but I don't like it.

@margonaut Maybe the fig tree will come back? My friend had one that was really damaged after a storm we had and it came back after a year or two.

At the end of this season I will cut them down to the ground and see what happens. There are 3 major clumps. One died last year (it's trunks split lengthwise) and this year the other two have gone. There are still young ones that came up out of the ground that are OK, but I'm sad about the dying ones. We've had them for 30 years. I think I let them get too big. Michael was good about pruning them, but I don't like chainsaws. Had the tree guy do it a couple of years ago.

@margonaut Oh I’d be sad about the blueberries too. But maybe they’ll come back. I’ll send good thoughts your way and maybe Michael is still looking out for them from above. My mom has two and the first thing she tells anyone who moves in next door is “These are MY blueberries, but you can pick the ones on your side of the yard.” (Funny, right? Given the way she’s always pulling up things from OTHER people’s yards . . .) BUT my mother didn’t actually plant them — her former neighbor did — and they might not even technically be on her property. She doesn’t have a chain saw (that would be a terrifying thought) — I think she she just whacks at them with hedge clippers. Fingers crossed for yours!

@wiesnerbeth not blueberries (I killed those right away), I was talking about our fig trees. I hope they didn't just reach the end of their lifespan. Surely fig trees last longer than 30 years. Yes, that's pretty funny about your mom! I'm still laughing at the rhododendron episode.
