Kina Shells by yaorenliu

Kina Shells

This is part of the Kina Shell sculpture made of fibre-glass reinforced concrete. It was installed in 2012 in our waterfront. Do I like it? Not sure as it does not inspire me.
Well, I don't think any of the Maori or Polynesian clans are going to pinch it saying is for their whanau!

They look interesting, although I guess the context makes a difference. I can't see where they are. Nicely captured:-)

I love the real ones and suspect these look best when wet ... kinda is sea urchin then?

Okay! It's strange but they looks like eggs of aliens waiting in the some caves for trigger event to start the capture of earthlings! That could be a fram from a good movie! ;)

I like the lighting and the pattern on them.

What are they supposed to be? When I Googled kina shells, all I could find was articles about how they were used as money.

I'm not too fussed about the sculpture either - but your photo is great :) I think if they left the spiky bits on it would be a lot more interesting. (and dangerous). I have no idea where this is.

This is very sci-fi looking so, I like it--great photo of this weird sculpture!

I like your photograph, but I think the color is what makes it uninspiring to me as well. Perhaps a shot of the whole sculpture could pull in a blue sky or clouds and give it some life.

They look like the real thing - not that I'd know. Are they inhabited?

@kathiecb That is what I found in the net "Evechinus chloroticus, better known as kina (from the Māori name), is a sea urchin endemic to New Zealand. This echinoderm belongs to the family Echinometridae and it can reach a maximum diameter of 16–17 cm"

@yaorenliu Thanks. I didn't know that was the Maori name. I think I've seen these on Jacques Cousteau. :)

The shells may not inspire you but the photo does do a lot! Perhaps it's the concrete that is not inspiring. Your POV is good!

@ksyu This really shows that you love science fiction and are full of imagination.. Next time when I passes it, I shall be quiet and walk fast.

They do look real xx

These are so interesting the way you've framed them. They look like alien pods!
