Flying Ant Day happened this morning in our street, hundreds of queens and drones crawling out of the patio and lawn, climbing up blades of grass and clover, to launch themselves into the sky, into the beaks of dozens of gulls circling over head!
I was fascinated to watch their little minders clean off the dust and help prepare them for their flight. The minders really had a painful nip too! This one still has a bit of patio dust on her back
The nests will now have reset themselves to look after grubs, care for the remaining queen and prepare for flying ant day 2022
Some years the swarms of ants have been detected on radar
Great photo but I canât bear them. I sprayed the area outside our bedroom earlier as the other year they covered the wall and the window inside our room. Yuk!
Sounds like the locust swarm in the eastern US, only that happens every 17 years or something very odd like that. Love the way you caught the iridescent wings.
