This is a statue dedicated to a wolf in a legend around St Edmund of Bury who was killed, the wolf guarded his head and attracted the attention of those looking for St Edmund. Is he howling at the moon?
@30pics4jackiesdiamond Ah, this statue is actually in Hunstanton where he landed in 855. He reigned until 870 after a battle with Danish vikings at Thetford where he was subsequently caught and beheaded. His head was hidden by his captors so he couldnt have a Christian burial, thats where the wolf came in - guarding the head until it was found and St Edmund could have the Christian burial his supporters wanted. The wolf vanished into the woods. But then in the nineteenth century a small coffin was discovered in a ruin in Bury St Edmunds which was found to contain the bones of a wolf..........
