Rural traffic congestion vs City traffic congestion

We ran some morning errands and found one poor mangy coyote ambling up the road. Ken turned the car around so I could get a photo, he, insisting it was probably a dog, and me, insisting (look at those ears!) that it was decidedly a coyote. Even the few passing locals were stopping for a look, and it's my hope someone called Animal Control to help this guy.

After lunch it was back to "so called" civilization, something of a misnomer to my mind. Someone asked where the traffic was in my last LA photo...well, this is more typical. Thank Heaven the two of us could ride in the carpool lane, and we arrived back home in a reasonable amount of time.

I needed a "Slow Photo Day" so I can think about getting caught up this week!
Okay, Louise, after much thought and consideration about whether it is a coyote or a rather mangy looking dog. I must cast my vote for mangy dog.

@thirdjoe Ken will appreciate your vote :)

(@thirdjoe ) and others coming by to cast a deciding vote, here's a photo of a sub-species that looks a lot like this...big ears and long skinny legs...no fluffy tail either... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Valley_coyote

A nice picture pair and commentary, Louise. My journo instinct rises to such words-and-pictures combinations.

Love the comparison! I know where I would rather be :)

I'm with you, Louise...coyote. Coyotes are becoming increasingly urbanized. Saw several over the years when we lived in Atlanta, and although I haven't personally seen any in Charlotte, they are frequently spotted here as well.
That LA traffic is crazy. Ugh!

Have never seen a live coyote but from pictures I've seen I side with you Louise, a coyote. What is a carpool lane? 365 certainly shows you a different world. If there is a queue of about 20 cars in Cornwall it is a traffic jam. I once commented that one of our back roads was busy as I had met 3 cars!. I used to live near London but do not think I could go back to living in a city after 15 years in the countryside

Despite the fact that we are surrounded by woods, I've never seen a coyote, but hear they are becoming quite prolific in urban areas. I thought they usually come out at night. How funny to spot one at 10AM, unless it really is a mangy dog. I am not a fan of traffic and avoid freeways and major highways like the plague.....LOL!

How neat, but it has the look of a coyote. We even had a coyote in town here, a week or two ago, within the city limits and that is really strange for our area.

@kelly2 Hi Irene... The "Carpool" or "Diamond Lane" is there to encourage people to ride-share. Two or more can use this lane which typically is less congested (because, of course, people aren't ride sharing!) If caught in the lane with only a single person, or driving across the double yellow lines, there's a fine that starts at about $200. Of course in heavy traffic, there aren't many patrolmen around to enforce it, and often people cross the lines to bypass...

@wordpixman Your presence and comment reminded me of another coyote incident... Orange County, where we live, is a sprawling "bedroom community" primarily, and on one morning, "I was surprised to see "a dog" jump atop our 6' cinderblock wall (typical of all enclosed yards out here). Immediately I realized it was a coyote, took my photo & called animal control. They can do nothing unless it kills a pet or harms a child... While perhaps understandable, it raised alarm & I called the newspaper to suggest an article about this situation with the rising number of sightings in neighborhoods (as even some comments -above- from around the country, attest). They agreed it would be an interesting report & asked if I got a photo...ta da! Well, "Yes...of course!" My photo with their article appeared the following week :)

This is perfect!!! Loved your narrative and the contrast of the shots. This is a photo set that really benefits from the time stamp and location visibility.

@cimes1 I'm with you about freeway traffic! Notice that I'm the one who can take the photos while Ken (always) does the driving! When I get nervous about the speed and the lane changes people make, Ken suggests I get out my camera! I've found that concentrating on taking photos of the craziness gives me something to divert my attention and I'm much more relaxed... Who knew?! Wish I'd discovered that 30 years ago!

@peggysirk See my note to Carole, above... "Ugh" is correct!

@Weezilou ... Thank you1` It's lovely to hear from somebody who not only takes a picture but tells a story with it. On the very first page of "Alice in Wonderland" Alice says "and what is the use of a book ... without pictures or conversations?" but with all due respect to master wordsmith Charles Lutwige Dodgson I prefer to say "Pictures AND conversations!" Oh, and about your shot in the newspaper; it's such a thrill isn't it to open a page and see your own work shared with the world?

How coincident . I Saw this to day on TV . by an nature movie. Coyote`s in America but foxes in Europe . Also bears.
Our car traffic tailbacks increase with 20 % last year. But after nine `o clock A.M. and P.M it`s better.
