Was about to use this as an email header to a friend who loves crows and I liked it enough I thought to hand it to you all as well! Crows sure make easy silhouettes against an overcast sky! I removed one of the lines and used one Photo Effects "Arkham" finish, but it's still pretty much like SOOC...
They're so big and yet timid as mice compared to the other birds! I have even witnessed a hummingbird join a mockingbird in tormenting one up on the wire!
I remember an OLD cartoon called "Heckle and Jeckle" and they were a couple of crows always doing and saying funny things and laughing at each other!! I seen this photo and immediately thought of them!! Never gave them a thought until now and what fun they were!! Instant FAV!
@Weezilou Hadn't thought of "Heckle and Jeckle" for years..... I do remember them now.... Wow! Wonder if these two are "married". Little disagreement there, maybe?? Cute photo. Crows are abundant in our neighborhood.... and they can be loud.
@pyrrhula Thanks, Ferry! Though they aren't the sort who endear themselves, they're rather exquisite in their black (judgemental!) robes. To me, they're big enough that I'd love to hold one. Actually, I did once. The crow wasn't looking where he was going and hit our front wall. I ran to pick him up...he wasn't injured. I thought for a moment about how I might go about keeping him, but quickly decided it was a rather rediculous idea! For a brief moment, though, I could give him a cuddle, and he was a nice-sized bird :)
@Weezilou We have several spieces of them The :
Kauw (Corvus monedula)
Zwarte kraai (Corvus corone)
Bonte kraai (Corvus cornix)
Roek (Corvus frugilegus)
Raaf (Corvus corax)
The first two looks rather the same and the Kauw can be tamed . But they keep there instinct`s , A year ago I saw a Dutch movie of a boy who`s tamed a Kauw. The name of the film: Kauw boy
Haven't been on the site for a while and saw your lovely pair of squirrels, then had to go back through all your photos to see why you needed healing therapy! Poor you Louise to do that on your holiday, I do hope the back is getting better, and the ankle too. Hugs xx
@lachapaudie Hugs and xx go a long way to making me feel better, Sue! On the up side, the holiday was nearly over when I brought it to such a dramatic close! Working on this yard since mid-Feb & it is *just finished*, so I'm blessed to have a lovely new place to sit and heal. AND, my animal friends never deserted me, so ++ all around :) ♥ to you as well
This is an awesome shot! I did one of crows while on my trip to Maine last August. There's something wonderful about the simplicity of their silhouette. Well captured.
@voiceprintz You are SO right about the simplicity of their gorgeous silhouettes! Perhaps they live their lives as silhouettes, so we know them in that fashion. A rooster silhouette is only as good as its side profile...
@pyrrhula Oh Ferry, I've been so terribly neglectful of you! Every evening I take the items that were not attended to and start a new list for the next day. I write your name daily, and still I owe you a letter! I have pictures and a good story to share! Thank you for all the types of crows you listed above! "Kauw" must sound exactly as we write "Caw"! I would love to see the movie you wrote about! Just yesterday the sister of a good friend came to visit, and she toild me that she communicates with the crows in her yard and they bring her rusty nails! She says she feeds them pizza and waffles for treats, so they must know her well and obviously like her! How wonderful is THAT?!
Weezi, someone was telling me, within the last month, about their daughter leaving treats and talking with crows as she grew up. As you mentioned, they would bring her gifts in return. She started talking to the crows when she went to college bc it seemed like the natural thing to do and some from home followed her to college! It wasn't a long distance - perhaps 100-125 miles - but, for a crow, that seems a fair piece as we used to say back home! Word must have traveled via the caw line! ;)
@voiceprintz OK...where did we see that story? I was in on that as well! The little girl collects the trinkets and saves them... don't recall the part ab out going off to college, but there definitely seems to be something about "Communing with Crows". I obviously need to start paying more attention to my two! What do you think Ken will say if I ask him to order a pizza?!
I didn't see it on here, Weezi. I heard it from one of the members of the chorus to which I belong. We've rehearsal tonight. I'll try to remember to ask (although we're only 2 weeks out from a regional competition and feeling a little pressed).
Ken is likely to humor you...once...maybe twice. The larger question is how will crows fit into your menagerie? And, will they follow you to NS? ;)
I watched a nature special about the intelligence of crows, and they are mighty impressive. A crow acting as watchman for a flock can recognize a human who has treated it badly in the past and spread the word to the others in the flock who will retain the information in the future.
Wow, this is fab! Love this, great shot. Make a superb print on the wall! And wow again for your memory! It is indeed my birthday, but today (2nd) and thankyou so much for the birthday wishes - made me smile so much! You are a lovely lovely person, thanks x
Hope all goes well and timely with your recuperation!
