Springtime Brings New Life to the Peaceable Kingdom !
Can you believe your eyes?!
If you've followed my site for awhile, you'll recall "Frosty" the squirrel who was incredibly tame and friendly. She left to have babies two years ago, we we never saw her after that...
In her place, along came "Nipper" with the notch in his ear. Cute as he could be, he was as skittish as Frosty was friendly.
On this day I say Baby looking into the window at me, and I had a Deja Vu Moment...Frosty would look in to get my attention! Still thinking it was Nipper, I opened the door quietly and poured the bowl of sunflower seeds... ...and he ran right up to me!
"Ken! Ken! Get the camera!" I didn't want to miss the moment, but no worries! He shelled seeds for an hour and returned again later. And he's been back again today (4-11, as I write). I bought a hanging feeder for right outside my window where I'll see him immediately.
I'd say "He's a baby...and trainable..." but I think he's got the hang of it already!
@salza We fully agree... I stay hopeful, and our summer replacement at the house will look after all the visitors. He won't believe it when I tell him he's got a squirrel again!
This is incredible, Louise! Mine still won't come anywhere near me. I feed them every day, there are 3 tree squirrels and 2 rock squirrels here every day, all day long. I still enjoy watching them from afar even if I can't get up close and personal with them. :-)
Sweet!! The Squirrel Whisperer is back in business! Baby seems to be quite comfortable with this new friendship. Your friendly, open nature is the force behind the connections, Louise. Love it!
Hahaha you always get me with your wildlife shots, I love it!!! Do you ever feel you're in a Disney movie with all these guys around you? He is soooo adorable and so close to you, I love him.
@kelly2 Thanks for your note, Irene! It *could* be Frosty's baby...The one we call Nipper" was young when he came around last year, and now this one a year later. I'd like to think someone else was enchanted with Frosty and is making her so welcome, she's forgotten us. If I think of her as *happy*, I'm happy as well! (As a "wild" animal, she's free to go as she wishes...)
@gaylewood I knew you'd get a kick out of this Gayle! I thought of tagging you, but was pretty sure you'd come by! As you saw, Frosty was a little lover, but "Nipper" wanted nothing to do with us. I was amazed when I realized we had a newcomer! I'm further amazed that for one so young, he had no built-in reservations about coming right over for the sought-after sunflower seeds! Wasn't even interested in the offered peanuts... You're on the right track...be patient!
@stray_shooter See my note to Irene @kelly2 above. It has the makings of a children's story...mama raises him with tales of the nice grandma with a yard-full of special treats and a warm welcome... He came right over to me, and I think I heard him say, "It's You! It's You!"...
@gilbertwood@janm Denise, believe me, I appreciate how fortunate I am that these animals trust me! It's a beautiful thing... and Jan, I would do everything to make these little guys feel safe when they come for a visit!
@peggysirk LOL...thank's m'friend! It's such a pleasure to have "my old friends" come by as they know the background story! I love being able to share the on-going saga!
@cruiser All babies are just the cutest, aren't they?! I'm glad you can see he's quite small, but with his appetite, he won't stay that way long! Regarding "what he was told", see my note to Ron @stray_shooter !
@tabbycat Lucky me! With little animals, it's a two-way street, isn't it?! It's fun to share this with you and others who've been here long enough to know the back story!
@pamknowler Thanks, Pam. I do love animals, and when I can make this connection, it's a wonderful feeling! I look forward to showing Greg, who'll be staying here, our new pet! He'll be delighted!
@maggiemae Thanks! Chris said much the same thing about his tiny size in relation to my hand in the picture. I'm glad I've shown that so if I post more pictures, you'll have a good idea as to his baby scale. The tail is beautiful, and has such lovely colouration!
@kerosene You make my day! If it weren't for my menagerie when we're home in California, I don't know what I'd photograph but fruit and flowers! If you want to see the photos from this yard alone over my time on 365, click on the tag, Peaceable Kingdom... Yes, they clearly keep me entertained as well!
@tunia You got that right! He can go right through a bowl of those seeds, and we know they're somewhat calorie-laden! Of course the grandma in me loves to see him happy while he's eating!
So cute and now I understand as to why the squirrels want at the birdfeeder so much, there are sunflower seeds in the birdseed mix. Being that it's my first birdfeeder, my husband was given a kind that provided for the most variety of birds. So far there have only been three types. I will use your suggestion as I don't mind them having a taste but the young ones to cause some trouble. I love this shot, it's so great, fav and now following.
