@annied yes, 'tis a well-known fact around here... Ken washes down the deck daily and throws extra chlorine in the pool ; ) He put up a sign saying "No ducks allowed" but they flatly ignore it and laugh behind his back, I think...
@maggiemae The "pond" is safe... The "dam" is what they're sitting on between the pool and the spa! I haven't often seen them just sitting quietly there together! We really do enjoy watching them, and the female can carry on quite noisyly sometimes. They're bothered by nothing and they come and go, day and night! (See my reply to Annie just above...)
@pamknowler haha! So private, they feel quite comfortable inviting friends "to drop in" for a swim and dinner... (You'll get an earful from Ken, but he also enjoys them!)
A handsome pair, indeed! And how color coordinated they are with their surroundings! We once had a Mama Mallard and ducklings take up residence in and around our pool, which put it out of use for a while; but we sure enjoyed watching them!
while watching the cubs game tonite, a mallard hen landed on the field and watched for a few batters, then got a big cheer when she flew out over the left field wall.
I was going to comment on the great texture you inserted....until I realized that's what the pool looks like in real life! Doh! Hopefully the Anaheim Ducks look as good as the Fountain Valley Ducks. Their first playoff game is Friday!!
@stray_shooter LOL...to add texture to this would be redundant! thanks for the compliment...I guess I really DO love textures! And have a look at Richard's @chard comment...he needs to see yours as well :) (Go Ducks!) (Will you be there?)
Apparently quite a few people are having problems with ducks (and drakes) taking up residence in their pools thanks to the drought conditions where they usually hang out. As I understand it, your neck of the woods is very dry too. You might get some more.
@golftragic I hadn't thought of the drought effect! Actually, this pair has been coming here yearly for 4 or more years. She's "gimpy", so we recognize them! At the outset they'd show up in mid-Feb and they were gone again in two months. This time they've been here for months...since before we came home in December! Some days we have 3-4 drakes and we've had 2 females. But the highest number was a few years ago when we had 7 drakes one day! Ken was NOT a happy camper! (He grumbles, but he doesn't overtly run them off... Maybe he knows how badly I need photographic inspiration!)
@golftragic Think "backwash", "brush down" and "clean the filter"! We have a man who cleans the pool and does the yard 2 x a week, and he says a lot of people have ducks in their pools currently. He needs to hose down the filter & put clean diatomaceous earth in it more often...
@golftragic must be time to go get some rest because thinking of the two photos makes me laugh... "When all those ducks become too much, it's sometimes necessary to rebuild the pool..." http://365project.org/Weezilou/365/2015-03-15 do you see a theme here?
