On this, our last day home in California, I made my way around the yard to feed the animals as is my ritual. As my eyes landed on this scene, I ran back inside for my camera, calling to Ken to come see!
I knew of this possibility from a video I'd once seen, and later, a friend related the same story within her yard...
I've received a gift from a crow!
I know not everyone thinks that's all that exciting, but I love my relationships with animals. On this spot, when I hear the crows cawing on the wires up above, I get them peanuts, calling to them, and then crushing them a bit so they can easily eat them. You might barely be able to see the bit of sparkly pipe cleaner behind the pine cone...the day before it was hanging on a small, live Christmas tree I'd set out in the yard!
As I'm so far behind in posting my photos, I've had time to talk to Greg who looks after the house and animals, and he said he'd received two more gifts...a pebble and another small pine cone. To me, money can't buy gifts as special as this! It's our good fortune that Greg loves the animals as much as I do, and will continue to treat them as I would. And if you're interested in the video about the little girl and her collection, it's about a 6-minute narration with some photos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n44g9fQYiXE
I'm unpacking a little each day...running errands...getting ready for our first visitors on Wed...and trying to have a look at a month's worth of photos! I'm sneaking up on our 365 meet-up in Chicago and can't wait to post my pictures of the time we spent there! I hope to post 1-2 a day as I can until I see free time ahead! Thanks for coming by and I enjoy seeing you here and reading your comments! ♥
Oh, Louise, what a wonderful experience! I can just imagine how excited you were to find these treasures! I'll bet it was hard to take your eyes off them. The intelligence of crows and this behavior has always fascinated me. Nature is so full of surprises and joy!
@janetb Thanks so much Janet for the lovely comment! I just read a review on a book that I look forward to finding. It's called, Are You Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? It's bound to be a good read! Thanks for sharing the fascination!
What an amazing thing to experience!!! I adore crows (and really animals in general) and I think this is the best gift one could receive!!! What a really fun story to read :) have fun settling in your other home!
@kerosene Oh thanks so much m'friend! It pains me when people tell me they dislike crows, as they're so intelligent! It would be like hating dolphins!!! I think we have our priorities right that we should appreciate such gifts!
Crows are such clever intelligent birds! How wonderful that this one is bringing you gifts! Such a lovely story behind this image! I know how much this must have meant to you when you saw your gift!
This pic. is what we call a ``still live. A pic. with a great story with, and behind, it.
