Traveling for most of my life, I always loved the view of cities and towns from above at night. Only in the past few years have I begun to be able to capture some of it, good enough for my personal memories.
It struck me last night, flying into the LA Basin (as it is called) how far flung the lights are, and how amazed my long-time local friends in Lunenburg would be. (Black areas in #1 are mountains and in #2, that's the ocean at the bottom of that picture and the lights set up to the unpopulated foothills rising from the beach.
No need comment, but if you're at all familiar with Orange Cty, you might enjoy seeing landmarks I was able to pick out, even at night!
1: is a freeway, but I don't know which one
2: is the coastline around Dana Point. (We were making a water approach since the desert winds were blowing.)
3: is Balboa Island. Besides the island's distinctive shape, the famous Balboa Pavilion sits on Balboa Peninsula at about 4 o'clock with the white dome.
5: is Fashion Island (not really an island, but upscale shopping) below the wingtip of the plane. The dark area directly below is Back Bay. We're getting low and close on final approach and after that, all those lights make for streaks!
And we're back in California. (Just after 9 PM, but I hadn't changed my camera time.)
Love flying over cities at night. On our midnight flight from San Diego, didn't sleep at all and the night was clear. Very interesting, especially over Houston.
@danette Don't you love it when you can pick out the city along the way?! Flying over Las Vegas at night is quite something to see (though we didn't on this trip...or perhaps I slept through it!)
