Laugh! by Weezilou

Laugh!

It was another delightful day at the zoo in San Diego, but we walked for hours, and one of the zoo's topographical features are the walkways down into canyons...and yes, up out of them again! I wish we lived closer by, and I'd go frequently for both the exercise and the reward that all those wonderful animals (and an amazing plant collection!) afford!

That said, I'm so bone-weary tonight, here's the gorgeous kookaburra we saw at the start of the day. The "Laugh" refers more to nearly every person who passed and sang a line from that song! I confess that I can't see one without also thinking of the little ditty...and my most heart-warming memory of our first visit to Australia was of waking up in the morning at our friend's home and hearing the sound of the kookaburra's raucous laughter!

"Memorable Moments"...the fabric of the best vacations!
I love the colors on this bird!! So pretty. Nice capture and processing!

Such a beautiful shot, and `I share your sentiments about the song - it's one everyone must know!

I adore kookaburra. I remember the first time I heard one laugh and it was up on the trig point above Palm Beach in NSW. It made me laugh because it sounded exactly like I would have imagined it to!

I wake to them laughing every morning and the ditty runs through my head - I wonder if it is one of the most known 'songs' the world around? laugh kookaburra laugh :)

Wow, nice close one!! Too foggy to walk here, you would need a personal GPS so you wouldn't get lost!!!

A great shot Louise Fav

You did an awesome job of capturing him through the fence!

Great shot Louise, there are several versions of that little ditty. The little ones I taught loved
Kookaburra sits on the electric wire
Tears in his eyes and his pants on fire
Ouch Kookaburra, ouch kookaburra.
Hot your tail must be :)

Super close up, composition

@merrelyn How funny!!! Makes sense that, in Australia, you would have expanded on that song! Funnier still is that I noticed his tail feathers are pretty pathetically small compared to the size of his head! He's perfectly arranged to be a caricature!

@joysfocus New lens! Now I can play along with the big kids!

@brillomick Plan a week-long vacation if you come to San Diego...SO MUCH to see and do, and if it were me, I'd make this zoo a three-day visit and, 20 mi north is the Wild Animal Park that is also part of the zoo, and it's just as expansive! Your money certainly is put to a worthy cause and every guest is a lucky recipient!

@louannwarren To wake up and hear them in the morning, it sounds like walking past the door of a bar where everyone inside is having a jolly good time! To hear them would make you laugh, too! I'm sure there's a Youtube clip for that!

@koalagardens The best I have...and, while cute and funny, is not even close... I have a couple of crows who know I'll give them peanuts if they carry on in the morning!

@jamibann Everyone but poor, deprived Lou Ann! @louannwarren Three minutes taking pictures at the cage there, and she'd have the song down pat!

@casablanca Anyone "from away" who looks forward to hearing them will never forget that special first moment!

@sailingmusic Are you reporting the fog-news from Australia? Must have a look!

@gilbertwood Each time you hear them, think of those of us who wish we could hear them again, one more time!

@seattlite @rosiekind @joansmor @starlea1 Thank you all for making the time to comment on my photo... This one just happened to be at the top of a 300-plus photo-day stack, so most appreciated!

You should look up the children's round song 'Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he …'. I just adore kookas.
