This is our second hummingbird nest we've seen in the yard this spring...and this one is at eye level in the avocado tree! If we pretend not to see her, she doesn't move. I wanted to be sure to have a photo, so I zoomed in and shot quickly without a fuss, and managed to leave her still thinking she was invisible : )
@stevepam At the most it's no more than 2" top to bottom! The hummers aren't much bigger than a small finger, but in flight, they maneuver like helicopters! Notice, too, it's all wound round with spider webs that she gathers!
@ethelperry Every year we watch to see where they dive into the trees, and then search them out! After we know where to find them, we give them space, but love to watch the babies after they begin to grow!
@elatedpixie You get whales...we get hummingbirds! What joyful diversity we have along this coast! ♥ @golftragic Thank you m'dear! I have this reputation to maintain with friends like you watching on! @danette and you as well, Danette! @merrelyn We have a few regulars year-round out back and it's always a joy to sit still with coffee or a drink and watch them come and go from the feeders! They really are a little miracle! @joansmor It's surprising the these little helicopters-in-flight do settle and sit still making it east to photograph them, In Lunenburg, I never see more than a couple of them through the summer, and we do miss them! @casablanca Whereever we live, we all find something special to focus on! Here, most of our visiting birds are not particularly colourful, when along comes a hummer to change our attitude! @koalagardens ...and I went nuts for the cockies that you Australians curse for the noise and tearing up the roofs! That aside, you Aussies have "all the zoo animals" once could ask for, so kiss a koala for me and I'll leave a note in the maternity ward that you said g'day! @ludwigsdiana Those little nests are incredible well-made, and then you think of how tiny she is and what she had to go through to gather bits and build it! The spiders in the yard don't build the pretty "pearl-draped webs" but more like sheeting, that's incredibly strong. When she wraps that nest, it stays wrapped! @kwind@pdulis@rosiekind@kwiksilver@seattlite Thank you all for lending your enthusiasm for this Little Mama!
@summerfield Funny...she and her nest aren't as big as the avocados! It's nearing the end of the season, and the new ones are forming on the tree now! @gilbertwood I fully know how blessed we are that the animals have chosen to call our small acreage "Home"! I'm quite sure we have more, undiscovered nests, but I don't like to go poking around for them! @robz Her proximity with this nest is wonderful. Just a short while ago I took a pocket mirror to look in and she has the typical Two Tiny eggs. I'll be watching for more update opportunities! @pyrrhula Yes, Our Hummers bonded our friendship! I love sharing them with you, and when the babies are big enough to perch on the side of the nest, I'll be there to photograph them for you!
Wonderful shot! We had a nest right at the front door. We had to start using the back door because when we approached the front door the mother would dive-bomb us! She had eggs In the nest. Once the babies were born and left the next we could start using the front door again.
Hey up, lovely lady! Just passing through and sending you a smile today as it's a month since you last posted. Hope you're feeling well and enjoying your break from here.
