@blightygal Because I'm too lazy to write all this down, and for all who may be interested in raising land-tortoises, this was such interesting information about this term I never knew!
Clearly there's not a lot here to comment on, but we'd probably all be amazed at how often we've come to think of one another in certain situations though we've never actually met!
@robz@wakelys@blightygal has a lovely tortoise, and I raised them through the years and for a number of years. I'd always said they hibernate, so when I saw the new terminology, explaining that it helps to keep their body fat on them, I had to share with her! So glad you found this interesting, too!

I always called it hibernate too, but knew about not having enough body heat to digest food. It's also why they have to fast a good few weeks before the sleep because otherwise the food just rots inside them and can unfortunately make them ill/kill them. Strange ol' creatures aren't they? Ours is awake now, from her 'brumation' (see, am learning!), and eating everything! Too cold to be outside for long tho and she's bored.
