I think it's the way the clouds have formed -- the light seems to change drastically about a third of the way across the frame, going from sunset colours with really dark clouds, to blue colours with light clouds. It makes it look a bit like a badly-stitched panorama.
Anyway, there's definitely a great shot possible from this location, so I just need to go back and take it! :)
You know, it does look like that type of panorama when it's a thumbnail, but when it's larger, it looks like amazing lighting. Really a fantastic photo.
