A mostly overcast day, especially to the north, ended with a slight gap in the clouds as sunset approached, so as downtown Vancouver still doesn't have a clear view of the sunset at this time of year, I headed over the bridge to Ambleside Park in West Vancouver.
When I got there, clouds in the distance were obscuring the sunset, making it less impressive than I'd hoped for. However, I hung around, because sometimes the sky can light up after the sun has set, as the rays from below the horizon light up the clouds from underneath. Sure enough, about 10 minutes after sunset, a strong pink and purple glow appeared on the horizon.
I had been taking wide-angle shots, but the clouds overhead meant the glow was confined to the horizon, so I switched to my 135mm lens and lined up with the fishing pier at Ambleside Park, silhouetting the pier and the figures in front of the brightest area of sky. The dark clouds just came into the top of shot, giving some nice drama to this post-sunset photo.

Beautiful Image. Love the sky. Thanks very much for your description of how you took the shot. I had no idea that you might see a magnificent sky like this after sunset.
This is so beautiful; On Friday last, I was driving to collect my grand-daughter and the sky was gorgeous and deep, deep purple not dis-similar to this beautiful image but couldn't stop to shoot, so glad to see someone has captured something so beautiful, you are very skillful
