The top fifty photos from the Red Bull Illume action and adventure sports photography contest are currently being exhibited at Jack Poole Plaza outside the Vancouver Convention Centre.
The exhibit is only open at night, with the fifty photos each displayed on large, backlit lightboxes. The backlighting, combined with the superb photographs, makes for a stunning display, and for those local to Vancouver, it's well worth checking out before it ends on Saturday.
I went to look at the exhibit last night, but by the time I'd admired the photos I was too cold to take any of my own, so I headed back tonight to grab some shots at blue hour. This panoramic image was taken from above the Cactus Club Cafe, and shows the exhibit with the North Shore mountains beyond. On the right is the Olympic Cauldron, with the water frozen at the edges from the continued cold spell.
I'm a British software developer and photographer living in Vancouver, BC. I mainly photograph landscapes, cityscapes, night scenes, and water.
If you're interested in any...
@roseolivia Thank you! No, there are a few BC photographers featured, but it's an exhibition for action and adventure sports photography, which is not an area I specialise in.
The details in this are quite incredibly clear and choosing to film at the blue hour gives it a sense of drama for being able to see the mountains in the background.
@sunshinephoto5 Thanks! Yes, this was photographed using my Canon 5D Mark III and 24-105mm kit lens.
It's a panoramic image consisting of four photos with the camera in portrait orientation. Each photo was taken at 40mm focal length, ISO 100, f/8, with a 6 second exposure. I could have shot this in a single photo using my wider-angle 16-35mm lens, but I wanted the extra resolution and detail that the panorama would bring.
While I absolutely love my 5D3, it would be wrong to think that any modern DSLR, paired with a reasonable-quality lens, couldn't produce a result that was virtually indistinguishable, especially at low-resolution web sizes.
@abirkill I always do love what you shoot and though i am reasonably happy with my nikon 700, it seems that the photos I see that make me go WOW! are always shot with a Canon. thanks for the info!
Perfect time of day to capture the astronomical twilight and to set up a wonderfully composed, executed and processed shot. My only wish is that you posted more often. 8-) A fav.
Thanks for the fav on the squirrel I had an inkling you would like that one:o)
