The backyard grew unusually still and silent. When I looked out I discovered this small sharp-shinned hawk sitting by the bird feeder. The doves were in the highest branches of the nearby trees, while the sparrows and chickadees had gone into hiding. He is a handsome bird, though I hope he won't be a frequent visitor. He ignored the obvious discomfort his visit had caused, sitting quietly and enjoying the solitude.
