My get-pushed challenge this week is to try some minimalism, or, in the alternative, low key. This started out as an attempt at minimalism and low key. Don't think it fits the first. Maybe it fits the second? Too late to do anything else. Besides, I do like this vase, and have been trying to find a way to photograph it.
@northy Tried to incorporate a minimalist low-key, but don't think that worked. However, was hoping this might be considered low key. I used only one light source, and the histogram is in the darker, shadow tones.
this is lovely! i really like the delicacy... did you try working it so that you had less lighting on the left? just curious... i think, technically, for low key, you may need to be quite a bit darker on the left... but i've seen a fair variation of images that are considered low key in terms of the amount of light on the subject, so i'm not sure... but in any event, it's up to you really to decide on the correct amount of lighting for the subject and for what you're after... :)
@northy Thank you. This actually was darker on the left, as I was attempting rim lighting. I thought, though, there was too much negative space. I played with exposure and discovered I could bring out some of the details that I like about the vase. I will keep practicing and try to get comfortable with negative space of whatever ilk.
there can be no such thing as "too much negative space" ;p
also, remember that you don't necessarily need to invest in props... drag something out of the kitchen utensil drawer and away you go! (or, y'know, use a staple ;p)
