Kali challenged me to "dark food photography." Great challenge as I struggle with both still life and lighting. I watched a lot of videos, viewed a lot of setups, and learned a lot. Here is my first attempt. Had to setup outside to get bright enough natural light, but then I had the ladder to clip black cards to so it worked out just fine. Hope to return to this again in the future.
Awesome work, so glad you got a lot out of it, i am always nervous about issuing challenges that might be too time consuming or a big learning curve but you have done yourself and me proud!
I did use a box. It was an old box from the barn with two solid sides and two slatted sides. I had two old cookie sheets that I slid in for a background and base. Then I started playing with clips and black cards to channel the light.
I also watched a KelbyOne course by Melanie Kern-Favilla on her floral images and she spent a lot of time talking about shadow and how to direct slices of light. Her histograms are so far to the left I couldn't believe it, but her images are stunning.
It seems that it's easier for me to learn to use light if I start with dark and shadows.
Agree with Issi, resonates on black. Well done, you!
