I am determined to learn how to photograph the horses. I do think I do better when I photograph things I love, and I don't even like horses. However, eldest likes horses, and with the change of seasons I feel like it's time to broaden my subjects. This was done with my 70-300mm zoom lens. Probably not the best choice, as they are all so friendly I couldn't get them to move far enough away for the lens to focus. I only got this after I left the pen. Next time I go back I'll have to practice with a lens that will focus when they are nosing around my pockets for treats.
IMHO this is an excellent shot. Not liking horses...and taking shots of them is no mean feat. I take shots of cows, they're curious and come towards me...and then back off...and then advance again. Great fun and rewarding...eventually. Hope you can hang on in there.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond Thank you! I wish it wasn't so cropped but I couldn't get far enough away with the lens I had. I would have liked a bit more of the mane toward the back, along with the neck toward the chest. I keep looking at the horses, and they do have some really attractive curves and defined muscles, as well as those great whiskers, ears, and eyes. I was just looking back through Jennifer's @jesperani photos and she was so good at horse compositions. I think I'll study her albums a bit for inspiration.
This will be your challenge - to go back and practice photographing horses with a different lens like you said you wanted to.
I love this shot though - I think it really works well.
Hope that it isn't too cold in your area to do this now - let me know if it works for you!
