Saw a flash of red disappearing into the lilac hedge this morning and raced for my camera. Tracks led across the road and into the north windbreak, and I didn't want to be led on a merry chase so I turned back home. There, down the road, sat the other fox. It was calling, but its partner wasn't answering. It obviously wanted to go north, but was wavering. Then I saw why. This area is Bro's territory, and out he came, tail fluffed and bouncing. The fox took affront, and dropped into a hunting stance so I started yelling and clumsily running. Thank goodness the fox rethought the situation and decided to go find its partner in the windbreak behind me. I hurriedly grabbed Bro and he got stuck back in the house for the day.
Lovely story, it reminds me of Murphy, the tiny cat who lived next door and ruled the street. No cats went near his house and even big dogs dragged their humans across the road to avoid him!
