split tone

Sally challenged me to play with split toning this week. Yesterday I digitized some of my parents' old slides. There are few of my little sister when she was young, as photography was transitioning then to more prints than slides. This slide is almost too hazy and overexposed for my mother to see, but it has my dad's shadow and my little sister in her leg brace, which she wore until her hip developed. I decided to try split toning to see if I could get some color to the highlights and depth to the shadows. It's not a great recovery, but it is better than it was. I was in a hurry last night and sent several digitized slides to mom's NixPlay. Now I wish I'd done some split toning on several of those too, as the yellows are rather pronounced in the old slides. I'm really glad Sally gave me that challenge. I would never have thought split toning might help with old slides.
Sally @salza Thank you for the push. I tried split toning on some old slides I've digitized. This may not be the best example, but I was surprised at what a big difference it makes in the color qualities, as well as viewability.

What a great result. How do you do split toning? Is it in Photoshop?

hi April... we're paired for get pushed this week... in perusing the recent months of your album i note that most of your images are in glorious colour and most are high key... how would you feel about working on something low key in black and white, and possibly with a noire feel?

hopefully that works for you...

btw, i will be going away with likely no access to the internet so likely won't get to my challenge before a return late next week...

@onewing I do my split toning in Lightroom. The split toning is in the Develop mode, just under Hue/Saturation/Luminance. I pick a highlight color, then adjust the saturation until I like the look. Then I pick the shadow color, usually in the the complementary color range, and adjust that saturation until I like it. That's pretty much it. Playing with sliders until I get a look I like.
