A detail from Salvation Mountain near the Salton Sea in California. The dude who created this place is more than a little wacko I think, but the nicest person you'd ever wanna meet. Strange place, (not sure about those scissors!) but oddly fascinating...
Featured in the movie "Into the Wild" with Emile Hirsch (not Joaquin Phoenix. Thanks, Matt!)
I was just going to say I saw that guy in Into the Wild. :) One of my favorite books and great movie. I think in the special features they say that they just rolled the camera for the segment with this guy. Oh, and it's Emile Hirsch as the main character Chris McCandless.
Would love to make it over to the Salton Sea at some point for no other reason than to say I've been there :).
@lintbrush Oops! I coulda sworn it was Joaquin. I shall make the correction... thanks!! and the Salton Sea is SO bizarre. Really great birding there, too.
:-D
Wonderful photo, makes one very curious and let's us think about what the creator of it is thinking. For that matter, it reminds me to wonder what the heck the kid of Into the Wild was thinking, may he rest in peace.
I believe it is also called Slab City - am I right? It is on the list of places I want to visit in California. That film was brilliant but very sad. I was told it was a comedy - if I had known it was a sad film I would have not watched it so am glad I did.
@emeraldboots Slab City is a settlement located right behind Salvation Mtn (a somewhat ironic locale if you ask me!) Also a very oddly appealing place, but it is most def somewhere you do NOT want to go alone, trust me on this!
@emeraldboots Awesome--you should SO totally go. Very worth the effort. Loads of wonderful places to explore in the area and the Sonny Bono Preserve is a great place for birding if you're into that sorta thing.
