It's a rule. When you see zebras hanging out along the California coast, you must pull over immediately and shoot them no matter what (cameras only, thanks). Even if there's no possible way to get a remotely sharp image due to distance and the heat waves rising up off the grasses. Doesn't matter, ya just gotta take the shot.
So I did. And it was indeed blurry. ...And oh well! It's always such a treat to see these guys, and today we actually saw two groups! One group which was much too far to photograph still had the youngsters with them which we'd spotted about a month ago on a family outing. So dang cute!!!
@ellen Yup, it's true. Quite a shock to see them if you don't know they may be there. They're remnants of William Hearst's private zoo from the bygone days. Apparently there were exotic big horn-like sheep and unusual goats roaming the hills at one point as well. I imagine those have been all hunted and killed by now, though.
love the negative space in this j, and as always, very nicely processed (like the desat tones and high contrast). The heat waves give it an almost painterful feel that i quite like! fun day miss......
Ok... I have lived in CA since I was three! I have never seen zebras or Man eating spiders! Have I been living under a rock or what! I would have made a pin hole camera out of a Big Mac box to capture this! Awesome capture, Jenn! Amazing! Fav!
I was surprised to read that there are zebras in California, but your commentary explains it. Until a few years ago there was a colony of wallabies in Derbyshire (UK) a long way from their natural habitat, butthey are believed to have died out now. There are a few places here where Australian black swans have settled and bred. They were all escapees from private collections, too.
I almost fainted when I saw this and read your comments. I have lived here my whole life and never heard of any such thing! Besides the two of you, I'm pretty sure its these zebras that will get me up there now!!
The photo looks great to me.
