Cedar Waxwing

This is not so much a good photo as a reminder of a fun, unexpected encounter. I've never seen these beautiful little birds in our area, but an hour north of here while visiting relatives in Cambria, we were fortunate enough to get an up close and personal sighting while out on a walk. We had heard an unfamiliar call and upon inspection discovered an entire tree full of these guys. I don't know what these berries are, but they seem to be a favorite meal of the waxwings who will eat them until they become intoxicated from them. Or so I've heard, and the fact they would practically fly right into us (I had to duck several times!) makes me a believer! I had to run back to the house to get a long enough lens and missed most of the light and any interesting shot, but now I know where to return at least.

Stunning birds - I tools some European waxwings on very similar berries - they were really blasé about me being there - maybe they were drunk as well!

I think it is a wonderful photo, and a fun story. I can just see you ducking under an incoming kamakazi waxwing.

They look like pyracantha berries, but I'm not sure. Did the bush have nasty thorns on them as well?
