Baughman Center- Then and Now

We just got back from our whirlwind trip to Florida, and I have had no chance to take pictures today, so I am uploading this interesting comparison of the same view 7 years apart.
In 2003 we walked around Lake Alice on the University of Florida campus and I took the picture on the left of the Baughman Chapel. The chapel has seating for 96 people and is used for silent meditation, weddings, funerals and memorial services as well as a venue for small musical or performing arts events. (My son plays mandolin in a Brazilian musical group, and they perform here twice a year.)
According to Wikipedia, The exterior walls of the structure are made of natural Florida cypress stained to resemble the surroundings plant life. The cypress is grooved vertically to give the appearance of individual tree trunks. The sloping roof is composed of tongue-and-groove yellow pine and copper to mimic the look of medieval cathedrals. The front door is made of maple with inlaid Gothic patterns in cherry and an ornamental architrave of crenelated mahogany. The floor is made of three shades of travertine marble arranged in a geometric pattern based on the building’s structure. The chapel is oriented so that the dominant axis coincides with sunrise and sunset at the summer solstice.
On the right is a picture I took on our recent visit. Notice how the two pine trees have grown so much they obscure the view of the structure almost completely. What a disappointment! I think a little judicious pruning would not be out of order.
Oh, I love "then-and-now" shots!! Sort of like time travel. I agree with you - I think the building makes more of a statement when it can be SEEN! Ha!

It is a beautiful area, very appropriate for a chapel. Thank you Allison for the commentary.

What an amazing building! Thanks for asking about me - all is well. I'm busy packing and the house is such a mess that I misplaced my second camera battery and the re-charger. Sytse goes to stay with friends tomorrow. Then, I can start stacking boxes in his room and hopefully find several things I've misplaced this week. I close on the house Thursday (15th) and Verizon is coming sometime Friday to hook up TV and internet. Funny, my first call was to set up electricity and my second call was to set up internet. At some point I realized I had not arranged for water and sewer connection!

Oh dear.... yes, those trees need to go. Maybe you should send your two pictures to the authorities to see if you can get something done! The photograph on the left is stunning.
You're right about my looking around for suitable cloths, backgrounds, foregrounds.... already planning tomorrow's!! And you do see the other failed photographs on the blog as well.

The old photo has beautiful reflections. The new one has the chapel sticking up through the trees like Alice in Wonderland, Still nice reflections.

What a gorgeous structure, it is a shame that the bushes are growing up so large and hiding this. I think Elizabeth is right, maybe someone would take a look at this!

I agree with you, Allison! Not one to advocate the cutting down of trees, those should probably never have been planted!

Love the comparison pictures! Good idea!

Normally, I am not a fan of cutting down trees but in this case it needs to be done...the older photo is magnificent with its reflections. I really would love to see some close up shots of this chapel...your description of its materials was so interesting.

Re- Brickworks...I just drove in and walked around...since it is open to public for weddings and as a B&B no problem...didn't see anyone around while there though...also didn't hang out too long ;-)

Such a beautiful little chapel. It reminds me of the chapel at Ithaca College, where I went to school. Such a shame that they let those trees grow up over the view.

What a wonderful structure!
I love your before and now shots.
I agree - a big prune would not go astray.
