I took this picture at the Virginia Museum on Saturday so you might assume it was an example of modern sculpture. Actually it is a wall of the parking deck. But then, isn't art in the eye of the beholder?
Architecture is considered an art (at least it was when I studied art history). Just because a building is a parking garage, it doesn't mean that it is not art. At some point an architect who studied design and took classes on aesthetics put the plans on a blueprint for this building. Many art schools have architecture as a major (my older son went to Pratt and they do). An architect most certainly sees his design as a work of art. It may not be a cathedral or mansion, but he/she still looked to marry form and function with some sort of expression. All this to say, it takes someone with a good eye to see beyond the mundane purpose of a parking garage and see the art in it. Good for you!!
