Exploring Africa

To further our school's vision of encouraging our students to learn more about the world beyond our borders, we are hosting a giant map of Africa this week. Here is a description from the National Geographic website:
"What better way to teach young people the power of maps and the limitless depth of geography than a basketball court-sized map of a continent on which they can explore, travel from country to country, hop around, compete, collaborate and have lots of fun?"
These First Graders are enjoying the trek around the coast line. When I arrived they were just getting started. Before I stepped onto the map, I asked if I should remove my shoes. At that moment the teacher discovered in teacher's guide that yes indeed, EVERYONE must remove their shoes. So I'm glad I showed up when I did!
Note: In case you are curious, that is a climbing wall behind them with a covering panel attached when it is not in use.
Wow! This is so creative. I am not in grade school, but I think I would really enjoy this experience.

That map is such a great idea! I would have loved to go to your school when I was a kid. It sounds like there are so many great, creative methods you all use to get kids to enjoy learning!

Many of us adults could probably learn a few things from this map. I'm glad you mentioned the wall - I was wondering! I was also looking at the children's shoes. They look like indoor shoes. Do they bring a second pair for outside?
