This afternoon John and I went to a concert at The Modlin Center at The University of Richmond. I brought my camera but I was not surprised that the usher told me picture taking was not allowed. I had to be satisfied with the poster over their sales table.
The music of Bela Fleck and The Flecktones is hard to characterize. It ranges from blue grass to jazz with world music thrown in. You know you are listening to innovators when the percussionist plays an instrument he invented called "the drumitar" Here's a video which shows the members of the group, although they didn't play this piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9XDUBDMNuk&feature=related
And here is a demonstration of the drumitar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlO1P_h4y3g&feature=related
Ahhhh...no pics allowed. I hear that all the time now that I have a camera. The band sounds good and must have been fun ... interesting beat. You're right, it's like something between jazz and bluegrass.
