Such activity in the Art Room this afternoon as Second Graders got ready to sell handcrafted products to their parents! All proceeds will go toward buying textbooks and workbooks for a pre-K through high school academy in Bertoua, Cameroon. The trilingual school, Jam's Academy (pronounced "Jom"), has been in existence for only 2 years, and for the girls attending, it is their first chance for an education.
Art teacher Holly Smith brought back the colorful fabric when she returned from visiting her daughter, a Peace Corps volunteer in youth development serving in this west central region of Africa. The cloth, known as pagne is made from lightweight cotton fabric and the patterns of the fabric are endless.
At the end of the week, after the parents of our craftsmen have made their purchases, the sale will be open to faculty and other parents. Having witnessed the busyness of the market on opening day, I am afraid there will be few items left to buy, but I am not giving up hope. I told Holly if I am lucky enough to procure a picture frame, I also want the photo of her beautiful daughter and two students smiling in the frame on the upper left.
What a marvelous art activity! I think those youngsters will always remember this! Your school must be something really sensational! I love reading about all the activities that take place there!
