I took the kids to the zoo for one last summer hoorah before school started and also got to hang out with my 365 friend, Meg. This handsome fella came right over the side of his enclosure where we were standing and posed for us, chewing his cud. I wonder if he thought I was a rhino too with my long lens.
The rhinos at the zoo all had less than full horns. One had none...it was completely sawed off. So sad that people poach them for their tusks (apparently they are worth the same as gold). And I am glad that our zoo saves one that have been de-horned.
It was the first time that I had seen the rhinos at our zoo, they were set back off the normal route that I walk. I was on the quest to find the zebras and got to see these guys, too. Their prehistoric looking, armored bodies were pretty cool.
The zoo is such a great place for photos. Ours is a pretty exceptional one, too. We got a membership recently so I can go a bunch this year.
@amandal we dont have a zoo pass. The grandparents bought one when we lived out of town to take the kids when we came home so now we just always go with them.
He has a kind of adoring expression....I think he does like you!!! Great shot of him, really nice close up. Your kids go back to school early. They don't go back here until after Labor day. I remember those days ....and miss them. Get a "grand-kids" fix every so often, and that helps.
These zoo photos make me want to take them to our zoo in Portland, which is a pretty spectacular one too. We had a new baby elephant this year and I haven't seen her yet! Would love to get her photo.
I didn't see a rhino at the Sydney zoo when we visited last week! An amazing animal and also as @adamj says, never realised what their mouths look like! Weirdo!
@thirtysevenways There are even cds of him reading his poems with tons of expression. I got those for the kids for Christmas one year. Check out "A Light in the Attic" "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "The Giving Tree." The first two are funny and fun as heck and the last is touching and make you cry.
LOVE all his detailed character lines. he needs to be painted as well in large format....like a wall mural! too fun to view, as a photo and an animal! i was JUST thinking about the zoo the other day, so very inspiring!
@pflaume Thanks, Lisa. Give the zoo another try...you must have hit it at a bad day. I'll bet it would be nice to do it alone. I'm always with kids which makes it tougher.
@psychographer I almost called it "A Little Horny" but then thought better of it. Sheesh. He did look happy, though. Happy weekend.
Wow, this is a fantastic photo, Amanda. Love the detail. Too bad about the poachers but this guy looks like he hit gold with a life at the zoo. You are lucky to not have to deal with fences and glass that get in the way of good photos. It looks so much better than the Sac Zoo. FAV
@julieco I know. I was up a bit higher. He seemed friendly enough:). Thanks, lady!!
@darsphotos Thanks so much for the words and fav, my friend. You should come and see our zoo sometime. It's really great. Have you been to SF zoo? I never did make it there but SD zoo is amazing!!!
@amandal I would love to go to your zoo in Ohio but doubt I will ever get there. I have been to the SF Zoo many times, especially when I was young. Have not been there in about 23 years now. Hoping to maybe make it there this year, if not, it will be next year. I would love to make it to the San Diego Zoo but overnight traveling for me is out.
@katiebrenkert Thanks, Katie. Do you have a zoo pass? Wanna go sometime as a field trip during the week?
