Decided to give shooting in M a try again. I tried once and failed miserably. A friend encouraged me to practice and that I did today in the dramatic light in our family room. My daughter was standing in it and singing along to the music on her mp3 player. Probably listening to the Frozen songs again! Funky music, indeed! Maybe keep it to yourself, though, sweetie:).
Thank you for all of your pointers with how not to shoot like a drunken sailor and all of your great comments and faves on my recent spring shots:). You all are wonderful! And I've even started making PP again thanks to you. It had been soooo long.
I really love this image, the shadow, and the story that goes with it, Amanda! And I love, love, love that song, "Play That Funky Music, White Boy!" :) Fav.
Amanda, I admire how often you push your creativity and your overall photography skills! Another in the lineup of creative shots, and with such beautiful study on the lighting. Lovely daughter, too!
Beautiful, the light, your daughter and her shadow!
Only until recently have I dared to turn the button to M. I still don't know what I'm doing :-) , but I've noticed just by adapting things (eh, you know shutter speed and so) my pictures look so different. I'm so slow though, so most of the time my children have stopped doing what they were doing and I've got no photographic proof of it. what I'd wanted to shoot, haha. Well good luck with The M!
It is like a spotlight, but square! That could be a stage. You've got some great soft light going on there (whether by lens or by edits, I can't quite tell - a good thing)
I dont think you failed miserably at all! I think you did great. You chose one of the hardest lights to photograph for your first go round too because of the extreme contrast in light and dark. Hard not to over or underexpose one of them. You're going to love it!
@katiebrenkert No, this wasn't a fail. It was the last time I tried to shoot in M. What's weird is that the settings are totally different than A. What is perfect and normal in A is way overexposed in M. I also found that I was unable to adjust Exposure Compensation in M. Is that the case/normal? Still much to learn, but I was pretty pleased with this attempt. Thanks, lady!
@larissd I've been singing it all day. Love that fun boogie:). Thank you!
@shezza Thanks so much, Sheridan. This was edited, but mostly how it was lighting wise. I did use a tranquil setting over the b&w and maybe this softened it a touch. It's a pretty dramatic and bright light. And I love it. I've already used it a few times for photos and just can't stop:).
@riverlandphotos I shoot in A. So it's somewhat manual, but not totally. I adjust settings, etc, but have less control, which is fine by me because I still have much to learn. I wonder if and when I go fully manual if I will notice a huge difference in my photos. I have noticed differences when I upgraded from a P&S to a dslr. Huge ones. And then again when I changed lenes and added an external flash. I wonder if full M will be like that.
Good for you! This turned out great, in extremely challenging conditions for full manual shooting. The photo is timeless, as every generation listens to music that parents don't like. What has changed is the size of the equipment - remember boom boxes?
i can't believe you have a girl who's almost in her teens. when did you start, at 12?!?! in any case, that patch of light is awesome and is proving to be useful, very useful. wonderful shot, kiddo.
@summerfield Had my first at 28. She's only 7, just picked out the short shorts to wear that day. Ugh. And then she rolled them up. I said, you roll down those shorts we are not going there now. Thank you!!
@fauxtography365 Thanks, lady. I'm freaking out that a friend above thought she was almost a teen. Noooooooo....so not ready to go there yet with my 7 year old. Must get new much longer shorts.
@paulty I did dramatic selfies there awhile back. I love the light! Thank you!
