turtle portrait

Met this guy on a hiking trail at the wildlife refuge. Quite large & hubby thought it was a snapping turtle , so the zoom came in handy. He was half in shade, half in bright light so tough to get a good shot.
Cool closeup

Look at all the duckweed on her shell. I have read that turtles that live in water only leave water to lay eggs, so must be a female? But it seems like the wrong time of year to lay eggs, so I don't really know. Maybe just moving to a better body of water? Love this shot.
