Out on nature walks, always hoping to see a pileated woodpecker but have only seen them twice and no good pictures. This afternoon, who showed up at the feeder in our yard...saw him out the bedroom window and I freaked...yelled “there’s a pileated woodpecker at the feeder!”, spoiling hubby’s nap...:). Can’t believe it stayed in the yard long enough for me to grab the camera and shoot through the window.

How exciting that you looked out the window at just the right time. Neat shot of his unusual head. I do wonder sometimes if I don't miss quite a few visitors to our backyard having just one large window that faces that direction (kitchen) - a room I'm not in very often.

The love the suet we put out for the smaller woodpeckers. They co e to our deck frequently but are very shy.
