Rainbow Clouds by andycoleborn

Rainbow Clouds

On the way back to catch my train home after popping to the Wharf this evening, I happened to look up and noticed this strange ball of colour in the sky.

I thought it must be caused by the sun reflecting on the clouds and is certainly something I've never seen before so grabbed a quick snap (bit of luck to catch a plane at the same time).

Have done a little checking on the web and found that rainbow clouds (or sundogs - thanks Joe) are rare and I guessed right, are caused by light passing through wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds. The sight occurs only when the sun is very high in the sky (more than 58° above the horizon).

I also read this is a sign of rain, which makes sense as lots of flying ants about today... wearing my country-hat, I always understood that to be a sign of a summer thunder storm. Has been hot and humid again today...

Guess this fits the look / don't (can't) touch theme quite well....
Oh my word, thats fab! Great spot and photo. Very interesting!

That is a wonderful sun dog! Very colorful. I like the jet in the picture to give size to the dog.

I've never seen this before - what a fantastic photo this makes, with the plane flying over too. Flying ants haven't made their way to Cambridge yet but guess they'll be on their way!

Good one, Andy... if you look through my photos from January, you'll see a photo of a sundog I took at Brunswick Heads. It was so pretty and unusual that everyone around took photos too!

Wow Andy, you got the whole package there! What an interesting shot, in that you not only captured something rare, but did the leg work to bring us the information about it...excellent all around!

You're really something...what a *nice* note you left me! I couldn't agree more...there's the gift of so much more than a photo to be had on most sites. I love reading peoples' captions, and after this much time, we've really come to know so much about individuals here...it's such a pleasure. Thanks for swapping stories with me...you've been fun to follow!

This is fabulous! and a great commentary. Interesting what folks are sayin about the flying ants. Their flight is triggered by temperature and humidity and it seems to have happened all within the same 24 hours.
When i lived near Southampton, Radio Solent did a phone in to report and map the sightings in the area in the space of a couple of days....how clever are these happenings! People's comments here are a good study of the day.
