Just up the road from my office is this ghost bike. It's been there a little while now and marks the spot where a cyclist was hit and killed.
I got this from the ghost bike's website "Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for cyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street" http://www.ghostbikes.org/
The name on this bike is Andrew and is dated 20 May 2010.
I took this shot with a new (freebie) app called "toy camera" that I downloaded the other day - a few different len's and a bundle of dffferent film rolls to choice from.. not the best quality, but I suppose, that's the idea...
Talking of toy cameras, I went to the Lomography Gallery Store in Spitalfields this lunchtime to try and talk them into sponsoring or providing some prizes for the photographic competition I mentioned last week.... My request has been forwarded to their PR person..
Gym, swim and sauna after work...
iphone/ toy camera / classic snap lens / over-exposured colour (ASA 100) film
Such a sad story to go with this picture. I have never heard of this before. What a fantastic way to remember someone who had died in these circumstances.
Thanks for sharing a sad story about the ghost bike. I have not heard of this either although sometimes crosses are placed where a MVA occurred in the U.S.
as a biker myself ,this is a great tribute,I have had many close calls over the years, people do not realize that bikes are to treated as cars ! great shot !
We have a ghost bike in Seattle by the university bridge from 2008. Interesting iPhone app. Looks like an overedited HDR shot. I will have to look this app up too! You are really having fun with your new toy...speaking of toys!!
Being an avid road bike rider I have heard of them but have never seen one. I agree with Mickey above that some people just don't know the rules of the road when it comes to bikes. It can get scary at times when you are in a busy traffic area. I ride defensively, never assuming that the driver will do what he is supposed to do.
Ghost bikes appear here in Seattle at times as well. As I am a summer bike commuter they serve as a good reminder to keep an eye out and pay attention at all times. I think this app fits the photo.
cheers guys... yeah have to agree, they are a sombre reminder! @azza_l knew I'd seen some on here before - thought it was Simon or Rich as they are always banging on about thier bikes haha
oh, that's very sad. I'd not seen a ghost bike before. I hope the sight of these will encourage drivers to think more about cyclists - here in Cambridge it's a major problem
I like the effect, a lot of contrast which suits this shot.
