Yew at Corhampton Church by andycoleborn

Yew at Corhampton Church

Stopped off on route at the hamlet of Corhampton, about 10 miles from Mum's today to have a walk around the old church there....

I knew it was old, but upon checking, found out it was built during the reign of King Canute in 1020 and is one of the few Saxon churches still in everyday use. It is also very unusual in that the church is not dedicated to a Saint, but known simply as Corhamton Church.

Found this interesting snippet: The Cluniac monk Raoul Glaber, who died in 1044, wrote about the terrible tenth century – as grim a time for Europe as any since. Invasions by Vikings from the north, Arabs from the south, Magyars from the east; peasant enslavement; famine – “mothers, forgetting their maternal love, ate their babes”; a “horrible plague - a hidden fire which, upon whatsoever limb it toned, consumed it”, now known to be ergot from corrupt rye bread – made everyone’s lives a misery.

Hmm.. Suppose you have to say that nowadays really isn't too bad...

Mum holding up ok, had a lttle cry at the music I picked for Dad's funeral and also at the memorial booklet I'd put together... Then it was more paperwork then back home to see a fresh new 365...

this is a beautiful photo. Hope you are doing OK...difficult times for you

Some history in this church and old yew. Great shot. As you stated, all is not that bad when you look at it in perspective!

I understand yew trees were often planted around churches to ward off evil spirits... sounds as if they had a whole heap of them to deal with in the 11th century. Lovely shot. Keep going....

I love this shot Andy...a great place to stop and gather your thoughts. Wonderful perspective of the church door and headstones. Having lost my dad just a couple of years ago I know how tough it is going through the mechanics at this stage. Thoughts are with you Andy........
