The Westgate Bride, spanning the Yarra River, is iconic for Melbourne. It opened, finally, in 1978 providing a more effective road link between the east and west sides of the Yarra River. The building of the bridge had a troubled history. If you were living in Melbourne in 1970, you remember where you were when the news came of the collapse of the Westgate during construction. Killing 35 workers and injuring many others, it was Australia's worst construction accident.
Underneath the bridge, in what is now Westgate Park, there are reminders of the collapse, but it is generally a peaceful place to walk. There are also reminders of the area's past transport history with old rail lines that used to serve the river trade and landings. I like the way these old rail lines lead the eye to the bridge.
