Mermaid and Dolphin

1936 Pyrmont sandstone sculpture by William Leslie Bowles (1885–1954). One of a pair of sculptures at the Hotham Street entrance to Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne. Fitzroy Gardens are one of the many gardens surrounding Melbourne's CBD. The 26 ha (64 acres) was set aside for gardens in 1848, very early in Melbourne's colonial history, and the garden took shape with funds provided by the wealth of the gold rush of the 1850s and subsequent boom years.
Neat sculpture!

Interesting story. I am amazed that a sandstone sculpture can withstand the elements for so long.

Thankyou. I love reading commentaries and notes from others as I am always curious about locations etc etc.

I enjoy the writing part of this project as well as the photography, but I have a bit of a tendency towards overkill, so glad you like! @peadar

Thankyou. It is also known as Sydney sandstone and was used a lot in early colonial times. Still is and is very durable.
