This statue once sat proudly on top of the original Atlas Assurance Company in the late 1800s, at 406 Collins street, Melbourne. When the new Atlas Insurance Building was constructed in 1958, the statue was moved to its front at ground level. During the 1970s, that building was also demolished to make way for the latest structure occupying the site at 406 Collins Street.
Poor old Atlas now sits in a corner niche above the heads of passers-by who hardly afford him a glance. He is quite hard to see and photograph except in locked down times when the CBD is relatively empty. After all his moves and in his current inconspicuous position, he must truly wonder who put the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Yes indeed! I have been using the lockdown as an opportunity to look at things not usually visible in the hustle and bustle of CBD life.
