This is Kia Ora, one of the listed apartment complexes along St Kilda Road, Melbourne. Kia Ora was built in 1936 in the 'Streamline Modern' style and was one of the biggest flat developments of the time. The complex was commissioned by the Dixon Family who owned the Kia Ora cordial factory. When completed it was very 'modern' with hydronic heating, walk in wardrobes and well-appointed kitchens and bathrooms.
St Kilda Road was originally named Baxters Track after Melbourne's first postmaster. In 1859 it was renamed and redesigned as the tree-lined boulevard more familiar to residents and visitors to Melbourne. It is home to Melbourne's major arts precinct and is flanked by the Botanic Gardens, the Domain and other botanical reserves. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, fuelled by Gold Rush money, grand mansions were built along St Kilda Road, many of which have now been demolished and replaced by modern apartment complexes. The boulevard, though, still retains its grandeur.
Thankyou. It is a beautiful part of Melbourne. I, too, like the narratives and finding out about the history of places and the background to the photos. @essiesue
For people lucky enough, it's a great area to live with good public transport access and lots of green, considering the proximity to the CBD. @joansmor
