Zermatt, Switzerland

The old village ('Hinterdorf' or rear village) of Zermatt dating back to the 16th century with its residences, stables, barns and piggeries, sits just off the main thoroughfare of Zermatt. Built with resinous larch, on stone foundations with roofing also from stone slabs, the buildings all tell stories.

It is a very odd feeling as it is now very quiet, tucked behind the busy main drag of Zermatt, but you can almost hear the people and animals who used to live there.
