Yesterday I had a great day as a birder. On a routine birding walk, I found (and more importantly, photographed) a bird that had not been documented in my county since 1957, and who appears to be breeding here. I thought I had photographed an Indigo Bunting until I got to the car and looked at my photos and saw it was a Blue Grosbeak. ("Shoot first and ask questions later" is my philosophy when photographing birds). Anyhow, I reported my find with documenting photos to the local birding listserves, and set off a minor stampede of birders in pursuit of the bird. They were able to relocate it where I found it, and find a female and juvenile as well. This bird is uncommon in its range, which is south of us, and very rare in Michigan. It was very exciting to find this bird, and this is one of the photos I took of it. It's a pretty, small bird.
Well done, Anne. I never would have known until this spring what he was. Now we seem to have several of them all in the same area. Do hope they return next year. So glad you found this one! And an excellent shot of him.
