Ebony Jewelwing, female by annepann

Ebony Jewelwing, female

I've learned that almost all damsel and dragonflies have stigmas, small rectangles of color at the outer tips of their wings. Mostly they are dark, but on this female damselfly with dark wings, the stigmas are white.
Great shot! and I learned something! thanks for sharing!

Are the stigmas a sort of defense camouflage?

Fantastic focus and detail, Anne! That is pretty neat that you can now tell them apart. FAV.

I can't decide which of the dragon flies I like best they are all so beautiful. I have just looked back through some of your photos and can see the stigmas on the others. They really are a fascinating insect.

Thanks for the information on the identification of male and females on these - that's so neat to know. I've really become intrigued with your damselflies - really nice dof.
